Summary of Position:

The primary role of the Applications Engineer will be to assist with the operational performance of our consumer facing applications and services, our data and authentication services, user store and video pipeline projects.  Key duties include supporting application functions including, but not limited to application functions, video playback performance, user account/authentication management, and content availability/accuracy.  The Applications Engineer will work closely with software developers, environment team, QA and front-end client development teams.  This role supports multiple video streaming products (domestically and internationally) as well as a myriad of device/web platforms.  




Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Work with stakeholders in the video production and distribution pipeline to assure content availability for On Line, On Demand and Promotional video services.
  • Support Development, QA and Production environments.  
  • Resolve non-code issues; escalate as required to Development/DBA/Environment Teams.
  • Debug/triage application issues including log parsing and troubleshooting across multiple components on behalf of business users and developers/QA.
  • Monitor system uptime and take a deep dive into logs as necessary (point for escalation).
  • Support software developers in the JIRA ticket escalation process (First line of defense in issue validation).
  • Collaborate with the broader Digital Platforms team including the leadership team, quality assurance professionals, designers, business analysts and other software engineers in an open, creative environment.
  • Supports/configures databases for data and authentication services. 
  • Create and document processes in Confluence for all team members, which will contribute to a stable system.
  • Subject matter expert for our client applications, backend services and business.
  • Perform miscellaneous administrative duties such as working with third party vendors and purchasing for the department.  
  • Perform some on-call duties as requested.
Experience & Skills:
  • Bachelor Degree in technology or similar discipline preferred; Minimum four years related experience; Minimum three years of applications/operations experience in supporting high quality customer-focused products
  • 3 + years’ experience with RDBMS systems and concepts; Experience with SQL, MySQL
  • 1 + years’ experience with a cloud-computing environment (Amazon, Google, Azure)
  • Experience with backend API’s
  • Experience with logging/network traffic tools such as Splunk, New Relic.
  • Understanding and first hand use of modern development tools including JIRA, Eclipse, GIT, Bamboo, IVY, SoapUI, Postman
  • Knowledge and consumer level experience with at least a few of the following devices expected:  Internet browsers (Chrome, IE, or Firefox), Apple devices (iPhone, iPad), Android devices, Xbox One, PlayStation, Roku, Apple TV, Samsung Smart TV, FireTV, etc. 
  • Must possess excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills which will be used to diagnose, debug and solve issues
  • Ability and willingness to multitask, self-motivate, and prioritize in what may be a chaotic environment at times, all with a positive attitude 
  • Team player
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility to work extended hours / weekends when needed



Additional Qualifications:

  • Understanding of Web Services, SOAP and REST
  • NoSQL databases 
  • Experience with one or more scripting languages
  • Knowledgeable in video delivery technologies and have a background in content delivery networks and their related operational support functions  
  • Experience with on-line video distribution
  • Understanding of ABR/DRM technologies (PlayReady, Widevine, etc)



Travel & Proximity Requirements:

An Ideal candidate is located in the Denver-Metro area and is capable of being based in Englewood, Colorado at Starz Headquarters.

  • Employees working in the Englewood offices are eligible to participate in our telework program, working from home two days a week.
  • Employees working in the Englewood offices may be asked to travel 1-2 times per year for training or to attend industry conferences.
